Most website builders offer swatch palettes with a rather garish selection of "web safe" colors. Weebly is no different, except, thankfully, they let you enter your own colors, too.
Since computer monitors are much more sophisticated than they were when that "web safe" distinction was made, you can choose other, more subtle colors for your site with confidence. The next challenge is finding the codes for the colors . . .. _There are three places within the Weebly interface to change text colors:
1) under the DESIGN tab at the top of the page, where you decide the format of your SITE TITLE, PARAGRAPH TITLE, PARAGRAPH TEXT, and LINKS. Clicking on the color swatch will lead you to a swatch palette. Down at the bottom of the swatch palette, there's a white box where you can type in a hex code for a custom color. It must have a hashtag (#) followed by a code of six numbers and/or letters following it. For example, the hex code for black, is #000000, the coral color used on this page is #CC9933. Type in your code and select OK. 2) Select any text within a text block, and click on the capital A with an underline to select a swatch color or type in your own custom color. The method is the same as above. 3) for those familiar with CSS coding, under the DESIGN tab at the top of the page, in the left-hand editing column, under the Change Theme and Change Fonts buttons, there is an EDIT HTML/CSS button. Clicking on that will take you to a split screen editor, where you will be able to change the site's CSS and see a preview of your changes before committing them with the SAVE button. __(This post has been altered to reflect the improved column-building interface. Weebly keeps making great new improvements, darn them!)
1) Make sure you're on the ELEMENTS tab, select the MULTIPLE COLUMNS layout icon, and drag it to the content area of your page. You can adjust the width of the columns by touching the vertical bar(s) and once you get the <> arrow, sliding them/it to the right or left. 2) If you want more columns, hover over the blue bar at the top of the section and select the number you wish. Slide the vertical bars to adjust your column widths. Want more than five columns? Select four columns in your first section and pull down another MULTIPLE COLUMN section, then choose what works for you. _There are two ways to change out a Weebly header image. Below, is the way to do it without going into the "Edit Html/CSS" section:
1) If you've selected a theme that has a generic header image and want to replace it, first click on the header image and an orange EDIT IMAGE button will appear. Click that and take note of the Header size listed on the upper left-hand side of the page. (It will be listed in "px," or pixels, but if you don't have a photo editing program which can measure in pixels, use a ruler and measure the dimensions directly on the screen.) _Weebly Templates
So far, weebly.com is my favorite template website host. Not only are their themes attractive, very customizable and easy to update, but they offer free, slightly limited blog pages (pre-linked to Facebook and Twitter), online store modules (that work with either Paypal Business/Premier or Google Checkout), Search Engine Optimization, nice-looking slideshows with several options, plus a whole bevy of other free features, including using your own domain name. More features are included with their very reasonable hosting ($3.99/month for a year, prepaid). Okay, let’s just say Weebly’s an absolutely brilliant company with a goofy name and quick email support, going strong since 2007 and I am not paid by Weebly in any way to say so. This site is built using a modified Weebly template. Website Tonight® Templates I also customize godaddy.com Website Tonight sites. Their themes are are more business-oriented and have less options for customization, although they are improving. There are some really good Website Tonight features: you can change background colors of their site building units (text/photo areas, etc.) which they call "blocks," you can "share" linked blocks throughout the site (which change automatically when one is updated), and have the (extra, paid) option to host your site on a secure server — all of which you can't yet do without intense coding on Weebly. I've just been checking in and see there are several improvements that have been made lately — one of which is to their slideshow feature, which was badly needed. I'll report back when I know more and can take the time. Also on the plus side, GoDaddy offers exceptionally helpful 24/7 phone support, plus the dependability of a company with a long track record. These are just my opinions from my experiences. I'll add other template site reviews as I learn more. My template website FAQs page was getting unwieldy, needed to be sortable, plus I wanted a place for people to be able to comment, share ideas, or ask questions — so, a blog it is!
I mainly customize Weebly.com website/blog templates, but also work with GoDaddy.com's WebsiteTonight template feature for a rather complicated site and will do my best to help out. So here are answers to questions you may have/solutions to situations you may run into. They worked for me, I hope they work for you. Please feel free to ask questions and share info with the followers of this blog. * * As you will understand, this page is solely meant to be helpful. Please take caution when you are working on your sites. While I take great care to be accurate, I am not responsible for problems caused by following these suggestions, whether they are my own or another's input. There is no claim of infallibility here. If there was, I wouldn't be able to offer any info at all. * * I'm not reimbursed or paid in any way by Weebly or GoDaddy. It's very easy.
In your site editor, make sure you're on the SETTINGS tab, select GENERAL, scroll down, select ARCHIVE. Enter your email address and click EMAIL ARCHIVE. A link to download your zipped archive file will be mailed to you. Here's a screenshot: _Not exactly. You can't download an archive of the site to your computer, but GoDaddy does back up your site when you first publish it, for later versions if you select that feature when you are publishing a change to the site online, or when you select MANAGE>BACKUP/RESTORE, enter a name for the backup and click SAVE WEBSITE. (Do back it up!) Make a backup of your existing, even messed-up site before restoring, just in case.
Complete restore: if you have a disaster, GoDaddy lets you restore your site completely from one of up to five backups, however there is no way to select just one page or block to restore using this function. Partial restore: this workaround is especially helpful if you've messed up just one block (or just a few) while doing major changes to your site, but it needs to be done carefully . . .. _Weebly is not great with the undos. I think it's their automatic save that is the culprit here. Usually that auto save is a very good thing — otherwise we'd be saving each little step in each little section, which could be positively crazy-fying.
Text: In the case of text, as long as you don't navigate out of the text section you are working in, you can often still press COMMAND-Z (Mac) or CONTROL-Z (PC) on your keyboard to undo what you've just done, just as if you were in a word processing program. But navigate that cursor out, and it's saved as-is. Deletes: In the case of deleting something you want back, that's where the "not great" comes in. It's deleted. The first thing I had to learn with Weebly was to slow down and try to be very present and zen-like, so I did less un-undo-able things. The other thing I learned was . . . |
SIRI WEBER FEENEY
Due to elder care issues, I am not able to respond to questions, as I am concentrating on working on existing clients' updates and further projects.
I apologize to those who wrote in and weren't posted. I kept thinking I'd be able to respond and wasn't. Please read the existing posts for answers and don't forget to check the comments. Several related issues were covered within the comments and there are good suggestions from commenters, as well. Also, with the new Weebly interface formatting, click around and you'll find what seems to be all the old features behind visually simplified icons. So, for example, when wishing to change a page type (no header, tall header, etc.), click PAGES, click the page's name in the list, and you'll get all the different types to choose from. If you're really stuck, you can also call Weebly at 1-844-493-3259, also check out Weebly's blog, Weebly tutorials on YouTube and, if you're adventuring into coding, w3schools.com is terrific. Thank you, ~ Siri Follow me:
My clients tend to be owners of small businesses, writers, illustrators, and artists who need to update their sites frequently.
A template site is easy to update. It frees you from having to depend on someone else to make changes. When someone asks what I'd recommend, these days I say. . . "Switch over to a template website and customize the theme to get rid of the cookie-cutter look." Categories
